CCHA roundup: Future NCHC foes Miami, WMU earn first-round byes

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – Bowling Green beat Ferris State in overtime, while Lake Superior, Northern Michigan and Miami earned victories in regulation.  Also, Western Michigan topped Ohio State in a shootout after playing to a 1-1 tie.  

Big Rapids, Mich. – Sophomore forward Ryan Carpenter scored at the 2:13 mark of overtime to give Bowling Green a 2-1 win at Ferris State. Senior forward Kyle Bonis opened the scoring for the Bulldogs in the first period before Falcons’ junior forward Cam Wojtala tied the game, 1-1, with 1:28 left in regulation. Bowling Green freshman goaltender Tommy Burke made 36 saves in the win, while sophomore goaltender CJ Motte made 30 saves for Ferris State in the loss.

Sault St. Marie, Mich. – Senior forward Domenic Monardo scored twice, and sophomore forward Buddy Robinson and junior defenseman Zach Sternberg each finished with 1-1-2 scoring lines, to lead Lake Superior to a 5-1 win over Alaska.  Junior forward Kellan Lain also had a goal for the Lakers and senior forward Ben Power had two assists.  The Nanooks got a short-handed goal from freshman forward Tyler Morley.  Junior goaltender Kevin Murdock made 46 saves for the Lakers in the win, while freshman goaltender John Keeney and senior goaltender Steve Thompson combined to make 26 saves for Alaska.

East Lansing, Mich. – Northern Michigan senior forward Matt Thurber and sophomore forward Reed Seckel each finished with 2-2-4 scoring lines to lead the Wildcats to a 5-3 win over Michigan State.  Junior forward Erik Higby opened the scoring for Northern Michigan and one of Thurber’s goals came on the power play and Seckel’s second goal of the night was an empty-net tally. Sophomore forward Matt Berry started the scoring for the Spartans in the third period, junior defenseman Jake Chelios scored on the power play and sophomore forward Brent Darnell notched an extra-attacker goal with 39 seconds left in regulation to cut the Wildcats’ lead to 4-3. Northern Michigan junior goaltender Jared Coreau made 31 saves in the win, while Michigan State freshman goaltender Jake Hildebrand stopped 29 shots in the loss.

Miami, Ohio – Senior forward Marc Hagel’s empty-net goal with 1:02 left in regulation sealed Miami’s 3-1 win over Notre Dame and clinched a first-round playoff bye for the RedHawks. Miami got a power-play goal from senior defenseman Steven Spinell and an even-strength tally from sophomore forward Blake Coleman. Notre Dame’s lone goal came from freshman forward Steven Fogarty with 2:23 left in regulation. Miami freshman goaltender Ryan McKay made 20 saves in the win. Notre Dame junior goaltender Steven Summerhays stopped 19 shots in the loss.

Columbus, Ohio – Senior forward Mike Cichy scored the decisive goal in the shootout as Western Michigan played to a 1-1 tie/shootout win against Ohio State that clinched a first-round playoff bye for the Broncos. The Buckeyes opened the scoring on a second-period goal from freshman forward Tyler Lundey.  Broncos’ sophomore defenseman Matt Stewart tied the game late in the period.  Western Michigan sophomore goaltender Frank Slubowski stopped 18 shots, while senior goaltender Brady Hjelle made 30 saves for Ohio State.
