Red Baron WCHA Offensive Player of the Week
Austin Farley • Freshman, Forward, University of Minnesota Duluth

MADISON, Wis. – University of Minnesota Duluth forward Austin Farley, who led all conference players with five scoring points as the Bulldogs earned three of four points on the road with a victory and tie last weekend at league rival Michigan Tech, is the Red Baron® WCHA Offensive Player of the Week for Dec. 4.

A 5-9, 170-pound freshman left wing from Niles, Ill., Farley scored three goals and set up two others, fired seven shots on goal, earned a +4 plus/minus rating, and was an integral part of a power-play that went 4-of-12 in the two-game series. The youngest member of the Bulldogs (he turned 19 on Nov. 10), Farley is tied for second place (with teammate Tony Cameranesi) on the NCAA Div. 1 rookie scoring list with 15 points (7g, 8a) in 13 games.

Farley struck for two even-strength goals in the opening 4:36 of play last Friday (Nov. 30) night in Houghton, hitting pay dirt on his only two shots on goal that night, and helped set up another score in the third period as visiting Minnesota Duluth skated to a 7-3 victory over MTU. Then in the rematch last Saturday (Dec. 1) evening, he helped stake UMD to a 2-0 first period lead by assisting on Mike Seidel’s power-play tally and then scoring another even-strength goal 1:29 later as the two teams played to an eventual 4-4 overtime tie.

Also nominated: Scott Winkler, F, CC; Joey LaLeggia, D, DU; David Johnstone, F, MTU; Erik Haula, F, UM; Eriah Hayes, F, MSU; Josh Archibald, F, UNO; Drake Caggiula, F, UND.

Red Baron WCHA Co-Defensive Players of the Week
Brett Stern • Sophomore, Defenseman, Minnesota State University
Landon Peterson • Sophomore, Goaltender, University of Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. – Two players who played key roles in their team’s respective success over the weekend – Minnesota State University defenseman Brett Stern and University of Wisconsin goaltender Landon Peterson – have been honored as Red Baron® WCHA co-Defensive Players of the Week for Dec. 4.

Stern, a 6-3, 185-pound sophomore from Lino Lakes, Minn., keyed a stellar defensive effort for Minnesota State in 3-0 and 6-1 conference victories over visiting Bemidji State on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, while also scoring his first collegiate goal and drawing an assist, earning a +4 plus/minus rating, contributing seven hits, and putting four shots on goal. The only goal allowed by the Mavericks in the series came in the third period of game two, on a power-play at the 13:07 mark. Stern notched his first goal at BSU and an assist in the 6-1 victory and was the First Star of the Game.

Peterson, a 6-0, 185-pound sophomore from Oregon, Wis., stopped 35 of 36 shots on goal and earned the game’s No. 1 star in Wisconsin’s 3-1 WCHA road victory at league-leading and No. 5-ranked Denver last Saturday (Dec. 1) night as the Badgers took three points from the Pioneers, including a 1-1 (ot) draw last Friday. Peterson was perfect at even-strength, allowing just a power-play goal on five DU chances with the man-advantage. The victory was Peterson’s first of the season and was the Badgers’ first since Oct. 26 at Minnesota Duluth. Peterson now leads all WCHA goaltenders in league games with a 1.88 goals-against average and .941 save percentage, while his 2.12 goals-against average ranks third and his .933 save percentage is second in all games. He is 1-2-1 in five appearances this season.
