Here is a rewrite of an earlier blog post with quotes from the player:
Jaccob Slavin, a 2013 defenseman signee for Colorado College, is now very much a Carolina Hurricanes fan.
The Erie, Colo. native was chosen in the fourth round by Carolina as the 120th pick overall. Slavin will play for the USHL’s Chicago Steel for another season and plans to come to CC in 2013.
He learned of it while watching the draft unfold on his computer. He had not talked to the Carolina organization personally but his adviser had an inkling the Hurricanes were interested. It is a good fit for the 6-foot-2, 170-pound offensive defenseman.
“There will be a lot of opportunities there for sure,” the former lifelong Buffalo Sabres fan said. “I am a Carolina fan for sure now.”
Slavin will head to Carolina’s development camp this summer. There they will look him over firsthand and make recommendations on how to improve his game for the pro level.
He plans to focus on improving his skating, backwards and forwards, while looking to assume a larger leadership role on the Steel as an assistant captain for the second year.
Slavin, an alumnus of the Denver-area Colorado Thunderbirds club program, played his first full season with Chicago this past season, recording 30 points (3g,27a) in 60 games and a plus-6 rating. That was a huge step up compared to the one point (1g) and minus-15 in 17 games the season before.
