NCHC postseason announcement set for Monday

It looks like the long wait is over for some NCHC news.

Goal Gophers is reporting that the National Collegiate Hockey Conference and the Target Center have scheduled a press conference for the main lobby of the arena at 12:30 p.m. Mountain on Monday.

According to Gophers beat writer Roman Augustovitz, here are the folks expected to attend: Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak; NCHC Commissioner Jim Scherr; Target Center Vice President and General Manager Steve Mattson; Minnesota-Duluth Athletic Director Bob Nielsen; North Dakota Athletic Director Brian Faison; Representatives from some of the other member institutions in the new conference: Colorado College,  Denver, Miami,  Nebraska Omaha, St. Cloud State and Western Michigan.

There will be a live video stream of the event on the Internet at nchcmedia.ngin.com.

NCHC commissioner Jim Scherr said last month that a site for the conference tournament was “very, very close to having an agreement.”

The Big Ten Conference men’s hockey tournament will alternate between Xcel Energy Center (2014 and 2016) and Detroit (2015 and 2017) for at least four seasons.

    Why a basketball venue?

Why not the Pepsi Center in Denver.

Bad bad move for the NCHC. A NHL rink would have been better over a basketball venue.

    • I understand your concern, but keep in mind that the postseason tournament revenue pays the bills for the league so a good contract with the Target Center would be awfully attractive.
Minneapolis is an good city to host with some league teams within driving distance and the rest able to get a direct flight.
The $100 million in renovations approved as part of the Vikings stadium deal should address any concerns about the ice quality and make for a good venue. The Sioux fans will certainly take care of the playoff atmosphere.

You would hope St Cloud or North Dokata is in the final four.

I would be very concerned if Miami or WMU is in the finals as it could be a disgrace for the league. The fans will not show up if the non traveling fans of teams make it far which would effect the attendance. Minnesota fans will be at the Excel so it couLd be tough to fill up with local people.

Also, the sight views of hockey games played at the Target in the past are a concern of mine.

The Target is made for basketball which is concern of mine.

Hope for big name teams in the finals and good hockey renovations or it could turn into a disaster for the NCHC.

      • Pony, I forgot to thank you for commenting. Much appreciated. Please visit often.

  2. All legit concerns for sure. We will have to wait and see about the renovations to see if those can be addressed. The length of the contract and any opt-out clause (?) may be known after Monday’s press conference.
