Wednesday reading: USHL draft, face shields, Sioux nickname, NCHC

Denver commit Dylan Gambrel of Seattle was picked by Dubuque at No. 11 in the USHL Futures Draft while Colorado Springs defenseman Brandon Carlo was No. 12 to the Youngstown Phantoms. Both play for the Colorado Thunderbirds, which are coached by a Denver alumnus.

The coaches were heavily in favor of getting rid of the full cage masks for 3/4 face shields at this past weekend’s coaches association meetings.

The Sioux nickname continues to cost North Dakota its scheduling partners. The Spirit Lake tribe’s lawsuit against the NCAA was tossed out of court.

Former CHI head Paul Kelly has landed on his feet at a Boston law firm.

No news concerning the National Collegiate Hockey Conference at this point. No doubt contract details concerning the postseason venue and the director of hockey operations hire are being fine-tuned. It sounds like things are close to being finalized.

Jim Scherr is optimistic about an automatic NCAA bid begin awarded to the NCHC before the usual two years of existence rule, according to the Grand Forks Herald.
