Scoreless after one between MTU and CC

Michigan Tech and host Colorado College skated to a scoreless tie with both teams playing strong defense much of the first period Friday night at World Arena.

It certainly wasn’t a defensive struggle for a time with both teams’ shots finding iron during a two-minute span midway through the first period.

Michigan Tech sophomore center Jacob Johnstone’s shot went off the cross bar and rolled over with 13:17 remaining to keep the game scoreless. With 15:33 left, a rebound attempt by CC sophomore defenseman Eamonn McDermott hit the post and then the crossbar to bounce harmlessly away.

The Tigers drew the first penalty of the game, but was unable to set up an effective power play with the Huskies doing a good job pushing the puck outside and pinching the puckhandler against the boards to force turnovers.

Rapuzzi’s rebound attempt early in the first period was the only clean carom the Tigers were able to track down. Rebounds were being allowed by senior goalie Josh Robinson, but at least two Huskies were in front to clear the puck away.
