More Sunday reading: Men’s league playoffs; women’s NCAA field

Here’s the latest Pairwise rankings based on Sunday night’s playoff results, which follow

CCHA first round

Bowling Green 4, Northern Michigan 1

MARQUETTE, Mich. – For the second straight season, last-place Bowling Green eliminated Northern Michigan from the CCHA Tournament with its 4-1 win on Sunday.

Freshman forward Dan DeSalvo, who scored two goals for Bowling Green in Saturday’s win, notched two second-period goals to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Freshman forward Adam Berkle scored in the second and sophomore forward Ryan Viselli added an insurance marker midway through the third for BG.

Wildcat freshman defenseman Mitch Jones scored the first goal of the game early in the second. Junior goalie Andrew Hammond made 34 stops in the Falcon win. NMU sophomore Jared Coreau stopped 19 shots in the loss.

ECAC first round

RPI 4, Clarkson 1

After a thrilling victory on Saturday night in the ECAC Hockey playoffs, the Clarkson University Hockey team could not repeat its magic on Sunday evening as the Golden Knights’ season came to a close with a 4-1 loss to Rensselaer in Game 3 of the first-round series at Cheel Arena.

Clarkson, which forced the deciding third game by defeating the Engineers 4-3 in triple overtime on Saturday, ends its season with a 16-17-6 overall record. Rensselaer (12-22-3), which defeated the Knights in Game 1, 5-1 on Friday, advances to the quarterfinal round next weekend to face arch-rival Union College in Schenectady.

For the third straight night, the team that scored first lost the game as Clarkson opened the scoring on Sunday only to see RPI answered back with four consecutive goals.

Yale 7, Princeton 3

The Princeton men’s hockey team couldn’t overcome a three-goal deficit and fell 7-3 to Yale in game three of the ECAC Hockey Tournament first round series. Yale would take the series 2-1 and end Princeton’s season.

Quinnipiac 4, Brown 2

HAMDEN, CT  – Trailing, 3-0, to start the final 20 minutes of play, senior Jeff Buvinow (Turnersville, NJ) assisted a pair of goals 1:09 apart early in the third period, but that was as close as the Bears would get as Quinnipiac (19-12-6, 9-8-5) would hold on for a 4-2 win over the Brown men’s hockey team (9-18-5, 5-13-4) on Sunday evening in the deciding game of the best-of-three first round series. The loss ends Brown’s season in the ECAC First Round for the second year in a row, both series at the hands of Quinnipiac.

Here are the ECAC quarterfinal pairings: 10-RPI (12-22-3) at 1-Union (20-7-7); 9-Dartmouth (13-14-4) at 2-Cornell (15-7-7);6-Yale (15-14-3) at 3-Harvard (10-8-11);5-Quinnipiac (19-12-6) at 4-Colgate (17-14-3)
